Why a Crown is Better than an Implant

As the dental world has evolved greatly over time, there are now many different ways to treat cavities, decay, and erosion of the teeth. Although, the best treatment option may depend on the severity of the problem, the patient, and the dentist too, finding the best treatment option can be overwhelming.

Two of the most common dental treatment options are dental implants and dental crowns. Crowns are more traditional and have been a treatment option for much longer than implants have. Today, we will go over why the dental crown is a better solution to dental problems as opposed to dental implants.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are made of porcelain or ceramic and they fit directly over the original tooth. If the tooth experienced decay or erosion, a crown will be placed right over the existing tooth in order to shield it against further damage.

An advantage of crowns is that they provide a more natural feeling when biting down onto foods. Sometimes decay and erosion can damage the original tooth so badly that it makes for an uneven bite, so a crown will ensure a natural feeling bite.

Dental crowns are known to not last forever, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If the crown wears out over time, it does allow for the dentist to go back in and repair the crown. When the dentist goes back in, he or she is able to check on the remaining tooth beneath the crown and ensure that everything looks healthy.

Dental implants

While dental implants are a lot more advanced, they are known to be effective. They have been popular for the last 30 years, which is a much shorter time than that of dental crowns being around. Dental implants do typically offer durability, in which they may last forever.

Dental implants are a great alternative to dental crowns or fillings, but they run on the pricier side because of the involved surgery that it requires. Implants also have a much longer recovery time, again, because it is surgery-involved.

Why dental crowns are better

There are many techniques that exist today in order to treat cavities, erosion, and decay in the teeth. However, dental crowns have been around much longer than dental implants have and dentists have much more experience working with them. With that being said, it’s better to choose dental crowns over dental implants.

There are fewer risks when opting for dental crowns because it is not surgically involved, meaning the recovery time is shorter, the cost is lower, and dental crowns are much more trusted - having been around for much longer. Choosing dental crowns will provide comfort knowing that it is an experienced treatment option, and they won’t leave you in terrible pain after the procedure is over.
