Porcelain Crowns and Porcelain Bridges
Crowns or caps are dental prosthetics that sit over the top of your natural tooth. They are used to refurbish the appearance of chipped, cracked and damaged teeth. Crowns can protect your teeth from further harm. Traditional crowns are made from metals such as gold and stainless steel; however, porcelain crowns are constructed to match the exact shade of your teeth. A porcelain bridge is a dental restoration that involves a false tooth, called a pontic, along with a crown on either side. The false tooth fills the gap in your teeth, while the crowns attach to the adjacent teeth and provide support. Bridges can also prevent your other teeth from shifting out of place.
What Does The Procedure Involve?
The entire process usually takes about two appointments. On your first visit to Lilburn Family Dentistry in Lilburn, GA, the dentist will begin by taking an impression of your tooth that will receive your permanent, custom-made porcelain crown. The dentist then removes any decay found on the real tooth. In most cases, a local anesthetic is required. Next, the dentist will reshape the surface of the tooth for the temporary crown that will sit on your tooth until the lab makes your new customized porcelain crown. Once this is complete, the doctor will use a solution to cement the temporary crown to your tooth. Once the adhesive sets, the doctor will check your bite to make certain the temporary crown fits properly. On your second visit to our Lilburn office, the temporary crown is removed, the tooth is cleaned of any remaining cement and your new porcelain crown is placed. Again, the dentist will check your bite and spacing to ensure the permanent crown fits perfectly.
Porcelain Fixed Bridges
Porcelain bridges are non-removable and made to replace several missing teeth. Porcelain fixed bridges are very popular because of their permanence and they look and work like your natural teeth. This type of bridge involves getting two crowns, one on either side of the missing teeth. Later, the doctor will attach the bridges to these teeth.
