Composite or tooth-colored fillings are used to mend a tooth that is decayed, cracked or fractured and are made to match to the color of your existing teeth. Tooth-colored fillings are ideal for the front teeth or any visible areas of the back teeth. Composite fillings consist of glass and plastic particles and are solidly bonded or glued to the tooth.
How are Tooth-Colored Fillings Done?
The doctor at Lilburn Family Dentistry will first perform a complete dental exam because the entire procedure is dependent on the location of the tooth and the extent of the decay. Often, when placing tooth-colored fillings, numbing the area of restoration is not needed; however, if the decay has developed beneath the surface of the tooth and underneath the coating that surrounds the nerve, the dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once the decay on your tooth has been cleaned, a cleansing gel is applied. Next, a bonding solution is applied, followed by the composite filling material. The composite material is then hardened using a high-intensity blue light, which takes a few seconds. When the tooth is filled and the composite sets, the filling is checked to ensure it fits and looks perfect. At this point, any necessary adjustments are made and your filling is complete.
What Happens After I Get My Filling?
At Lilburn Family Dentistry, our staff understands the importance of maintaining the beautiful smile tooth-colored fillings help to provide. After your procedure, our staff will give you any necessary instructions. Some patients experience mild discomfort, usually at the site of the anesthetic. To alleviate the discomfort, we suggest you take an over the counter pain medication such as ibuprofen. If your pain persists, call the office and speak to a staff member. We also recommend you exercise good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis, maintaining a healthy diet, and scheduling regular dental and cleaning appointments with our doctor at our Lilburn office.
