Dentures and Partial Dentures

Why Implant Supported Dentures Are a Lifelong Investment in Your Smile

When a dentist replaces your missing teeth with implant supported dentures, it can help improve your smile and your appearance. Without any support from dentures, your facial muscles can sag and make you appear older than you are. Implant supported dentures can also help you speak and chew food more comfortably.

Implant supported dentures

Dentists can offer two different kinds of implant supported dentures. There are full dentures that will take the place of all the missing lower and upper teeth. These new dentures will sit on top of four or more implant posts, which will bond with the jaw.

A partial set will help restore a considerable section of a patient’s dental arch. This will replace any missing adjacent teeth. The implant supported bridge will need two or more posts for total support.

The procedure

First, the dentist will need to evaluate if implant supported dentures are the right fit for a patient. This involves X-rays and images of the jawbone, but tissue loss may also affect a person’s ability to get implants. However, a bone graft may often be used to build a stronger foundation for the new restoration. These images can help the dentist find the right spot for implant placement. Then, the dentist will position the posts in the strongest parts of the bone.

Next, the dentist will numb the treatment area before placing the posts through the gums using small incisions. The number of posts will depend on the specific type of restoration. It is normal for it to take four to six months for the bone to fully heal around the dental implants. The dentist may provide a temporary denture during the healing process. Once the bonding has finished, the dentures will be attached to the posts.

The benefits

The following are a few of the benefits offered by these dentures.

  • Greater stability: The new implants act as roots for the patient’s missing teeth and become a fixed segment of the mouth. The bonding process will help the dentures stay in place. Because of this increased stability, chewing difficult foods will be possible once more
  • Convenience: Dental implant maintenance is very simple. Patients can continue routine oral hygiene habits, such as flossing, brushing and keeping dentist appointments. If a patient has a full set of lower and upper dental implant supported dentures, their proper care is necessary. If a patient develops gum disease, it can lead to gum recession and the soft tissues will begin pulling away from the implant posts. It is rare for implant failure if a patient practices routine oral care
  • Jawbone health: When the lower and upper teeth touch, a small shockwave is sent to surrounding bone tissue. This shockwave stimulates bone regeneration and helps replace cells that are lost through normal daily wear and tear. When someone is missing teeth, the bone no longer receives these signals and the shape of the jaw can change. The bone may begin receding from other tooth roots, which can cause more tooth loss. By getting dentures, the artificial teeth will begin sending this signal once more, promoting jawbone health
